The Stone Barn serves as a workspace for a master furniture maker who needed a place to store his portable mill as well as a usable workshop space in colder weather.

To accommodate the client’s vision, the building needed four large openings: a pair on the gable ends, sized for a tractor to pull the mill in and out of the building, and a pair on the eave sides, sized to allow large timbers (mainly locally harvested deadwood) to be loaded onto the mill and boards to be extracted on the opposite side. An owl house was also incorporated in one of the gable-end windows.

The intention was to celebrate the form and texture that emerged from making as simple a structure as possible. At its very heart, the design and materials are in conversation with the purpose of the space: providing shelter, working with local wood, and making beautiful things.
